When Linnea imagined being a lawyer in law school she had envisioned late nights full of high powered banter, sharp suits, and adrenaline-fueled legalistic drama. Instead it was mostly junior level associates in increasingly sloppy clothes with haggard looks, kept awake by entirely too much caffeine. It also meant handling things for clients that were in no way, shape, or form an actual emergency but the client had decided it was and so here she was, staying until obscenely late hours again.
Jack was the last one in the office with her and she was grateful for his company. Linnea moved to the couch in his office with her laptop so they could keep each other awake and mock at each otherâs playlists. But unlike with Benjamin, his teasing didnât raise her blood pressure.
It was 11:30 when they finally finished. Linnea jumped up and clapped just as Jackâs Spotify playlistâ R&B Hits of the 90sâ clicked over to her favorite Boyz II Men song. âThey totally played this at my prom,â she said, elated work was done for the night.
âLet me guessâyou were prom queen?â Jack asked.
Linnea laughed. âNope, but I was on Homecoming Court.â
âWell, I was Prom King, so guess I have you beat there,â he teased.
She smiled and tipped her head to the side. It was cheesy as hell, a pop song pretty much designed to make fifteen year old girls swoon and demand their boyfriends claim it as âtheirâ song, but she always cranked it up when it came on the radio when she was alone in her car. âWell, Prom King, itâs my favorite.â
âThen letâs dance,â Jack offered, and held out his hand.
She shouldnât. She really, really shouldnât, because she knew what that implied and she wasnât ready for that yet.
âIf you insist,â she said instead of no, we should probably be heading home and let him pull her to him. Not too closeâhe seemed too cognizant of what that meantâbut close enough for his hand to rest on her lower back. She laughed, trying vainly to keep up the charade that they were just friends goofing around, but the song continued and the space between them collapsed, like planets drawn together by gravity. Pretty soon her cheek was next to his and there was barely a hairsbreadth of air between them.
âWhy do I get the feeling this is a bad idea?â Jack asked, his breath stirring the hair by her ear.
âBecause it probably is,â she answered. Her heart was pounding and she couldnât stop breathing him in, so it was time to take drastic action. She wrenched herself away and wrapped her cardigan around herself like armor. âI should go,â she said tightly.
âLinneaââ
âI should go,â she repeated, and walked out without a second look.
